I came across the above in Al Kafi, volume 6 and I wondered how we go about interpreting it in an Islamic sense. I ask this question purely academically; coming from an Indo-Pak background earrings have always been discouraged and in the west the argument of it being a ‘feminine’ quality (which wouldn’t hold up in 2022) but the above hadith goes on to say this is a recommended act and that, beyond piercings, the Imams apparently had earrings, too.

1. These narrations are weak
2. Today some marajie consider earrings usage is mainly by females and so males should not be wearing them
3. Some consider times have changed and circumstances different (eg marriage of 9 year olds was normally at time of Prophet)
