My question is regarding the precautionary ‘imsaak’ period before fajr.
Is it compulsory to observe this and start the fast at the time of imsaak and is the fast void if you eat during the time of imsaak? And what are the references for this.

It is advisory and not obligatory, due to the difficulty of determining exact fajr or subh sadiq time in some places
