Question:I run a restaurant and I have fish served. The fish served is Basa which I believe is not allowed for us to consume therefore do I need to inform every momin that comes in you cant have fish or leave it as choice for them to decide ?

Ayatollah:Ayatulla Sistani

Answer: According to Ayatollah Sistani, any fish without scales cannot be served to anyone, Muslim or non Muslim. All fish that you serve on your restaurant must have scales.
Question:I’ve been having trouble understanding what are the most recommended Surahs to read in the wajib prayers and Salatul Layl. Regarding the wajib prayers, I read that according to Sayed Sistani it’s best to recite Qadr in the first rakat and Tawheed in the second. I’ve seen others say the same (e.g. Khomeini), but then they also say for examples it’s best to read surahs like Qiyamah, Qashiyah, Naba, Insan for Fajr or for example Takathur, Nasr for Asr. So I’m confused out of all these recommendations, which choice is the most recommended? I’ve seen different recommendations for Salatul Layl. For example Allamah Tabatabai says to read the azaim surahs (I’m guessing he means Sajdah, Fussilat, Najm, Alaq) and then Allamah Majlisi says for example surahs like Muzzamil, Naba, Yaseen, Dhukan, Mulk, Insan. I’ve read Sadiq Shirazi recommends longer surahs - he mentions Anam, Khaf, Anbiya. So again I’m confused as to which is the most recommended?

Ayatollah:sayed Sistani

Answer: Yes there are various narrations.
It’s best to have a list and recite as many as possible in different salah. In that way you won’t miss out and cover all possibilities.

Question:If Islam doesn't discriminate people on the basis of gender then why does a husband has more status than wife such that to a wife her husband is next to God(majazi-e-Khuda) and if God would have allowed anyone to do sajdah for anyone other than him then it would have been the husband? I have read this in Islamic books and have heard from elders also that for a wife the husband is next to God, such that if god would have allowed sajdah for anyone it would have been for the husband . I want to know if this is true or not because in India husbands generally quote this that they are majazi-e-khuda and they have more status than the wife and also they quote the verse 4:34 where it is written that men are superior to women. The book where I read this is known as "Tohfatul Awaam ". It is in urdu. It is generally used for matters related to Islamic jurisprudence. Under the section of rights of husband and wife, there is a hadith mentioned which is attributed to Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) that if god would have allowed sajdah for anyone apart from him than I would have ordered women to do sajdah to their husband.
Is this hadith authentic?

Ayatollah:Sistani

Answer: This is an exaggeration. In the eyes of Allah both are equal. In Islamic law the wife has more rights than the husband. We must not let the western ideology influence us wrongly, but rather study Islam properly from our ulema.

Yes the Hadith is there but it’s being used out of context. We have to see what the Quran says first. (4:34) does not say men are superior. It says they are maintainers of women.

Question:I know it is haraam to show your face in makeup in front of non mahram but we know in Indian weddings a bride has to do makeup and they bring her in front of her non mahram inlaws. Its not only about the wedding day a newlywed girl has to wear makeup even after her wedding also and non mahram in laws are present . What should I do?

Ayatollah:Sistani

Answer: It’s not allowed to wear make up in front of non Mahrem. Don’t displease God to please His creation. Stay patient and He will help you. Maybe if you have to wear make up ask for your face to be covered by white veil when non Mahrem enter. This is what happens in Iraq weddings.
Question:I just wanted to ask whether there's any objection in pursuing the art of Islamic Geometry, I know it seems obvious as they're used to decorate mosques and ziyarah but I wanted to check whether it's acceptable to print on clothing? For example an Islamic Geometry print on garments

Ayatollah:Sistani

Answer: There is no problem in this.
Question:There are many tafsirs of the Quran but I am struggling to find a reliable shi’a tafsir. I have limited Arabic knowledge so is there any English Shi’a tafsir you can recommend?

Ayatollah:Sistani

Answer: Unfortunately we don’t have many.
Only one is the englightening commentary of the Quran found in al-Islam.org but it’s not very comprehensive.
